The Skyline Lady Trojans soccer team lost their second to last game of the season 2-0 to the Chabot Gladiators on Nov. 5.
The first half was hard fought by each side, which meant neither team could easily hold possession. Chabot flexed its offensive muscle during the first half, with seven shots on goal compared to Skyline’s four. Each team hit the crossbar of the goal on two occasions. A Chabot offensive strike left the goal wide-open when goal-keeper dropped to deflect a shot. Skyline’s Jennyfer Prudencio came to her rescue with a karate-style kick to the ball that staved off a very early Chabot lead.
Skyline pushed the ball to mid-field, only for Chabot to steal the ball and quickly use a misdirected pass to bounce back. Chabot’s forward Dana Fagundes used the opportunity to score a goal with 20 minutes left in the first half. Chabot grew more and more successful as Skyline’s players slowly succumbed to their preexisting injuries. Chabot had multiple botched corner kicks where the kicker hit the goal instead of passing to other players. The first half ended with the score at 0-1 with Chabot in the lead.
“You can’t practice with 8 healthy players when a game has 11 on each team,” said Skyline Head Coach Kevin Corsiglia.
Corsiglia was forced to move players to positions they were clearly and openly uncomfortable with. The inconsistencies of the team have made it nearly impossible for the soccer team to deliver results in a season game.
The second half looked grim as Skyline lost energy and momentum. Chabot forward scored once more 20 minutes into the second half, bringing the score to 0-2.
Now, 10 minutes after the goal, Chabot’s forward Virginia Boatwright made a second attempt on the Skyline goal. The goal-keeper came out to block and made a sliding tackle in. The forward attempted to jump over the goalie to protect herself, kicking her in the collar accidentally. The kick was visibly painful and left the goalie floored for almost four minutes. She was taken off the field and checked for internal injury. Skyline’s Shannon Marmalejo replaced her as goalie for the remaining 20 min.
“It’s not a very good season when you’ve just used your sixth keeper of the year,” said Corsiglia about the injury.
The rest of the game remained scoreless but a few shots on goal were blocked on each side. The final score was 0-2, Chabot.
“Jas and I could hit the cross bar,” said Kailey Rappaport when asked about how they played well.
“We couldn’t connect to score… It was a tough battle,” said Shannon Marmalejo.
The women’s last game will be on Friday Nov. 9. The game is at CCSF and starts at 3 p.m.
