Lady Trojans volleyball team lost to the Foothill Owls 3-0 on Fri. Oct. 12.
Skyline started off with an ace, Marielle Beltran delivered and earned the first point in the match. Shortly after, the Lady Trojans failed to follow through and the Owls began conquering the first set of the game. The Lady Trojans lost the first set of the game due to many “campfires” (when the ball drops between the players and they’re caught watching it and not deciding who should hit it). The first set ended with a score of 7-25.
“We started flat to begin with.” said Coach Ed Parker “We picked it up the second game and in the first we just came up short.”
The second set began with the Owls serving towards Sarah Leong who was desperate to put an end to their ego by spiking them. This caused the opposing team to slip and return the ball outside of Skyline’s court, which of earned the first point this set.
The Lady Trojans kicked up their gears with spikes and short serves but this wasn’t enough to rattle the Owls. The second set ended with another loss of 18-25.
The Lady Trojans continued to fight in the third set so that they could push for one more match.
Leong started with another strong, high jump serve, which Julianna Hernandez returned to launch an unforgiving “kill” to the Owls. Hernandez continued burning it up with her “strong side” spikes gaining points for the Trojans.
When the Owls began gaining momentum again, Cierra Peel retaliated twice with two flawless spikes, respectfully earning 2 additional points. The score stood at 20-22 when Skyline’s Coach Parker called for a time-out. When the Lady Trojans returned to the court, their momentum was diminished. The Owls swooped a victory when another “campfire” happened on the Skyline side.
“We tend to know we can get the ball but it drops in front of us because we’re not sure who’s going to take it,” said Leong. “So we should play more aggressively.”
With the strong serves, killer spikes and swift bumps, the potential to win was there. The lack of focus to communicate rapidly and be aggressive cost the Lady Trojans the game. They are going to have to come together as a team to win future games with their skills and communication.
“I noticed that the last two sets we woke up and we were focused.” said Shelbie Sangria. “We have to play for each other and not for ourselves.”
Skyline plays Foothill College again on Nov. 9 in Los Altos at 6:30pm.
