The Skyline Trojan men’s soccer team tied with the Mariners from Marin College Friday Sept. 7 at the soccer field at Skyline College.
The game was the third game of the season for the Trojans, after losing their first game versus Santa Rosa and then winning their second game against Delta College with a score of 2-1.
The Trojans energy led to quick aggression which resulted in the Mariners having a lot of trouble getting to the ball. Roughly 32 minutes in to the game, the Trojans were given a penalty kick. Yoan Rosas was tackled from behind by a player from the Mariners.
Skyline took a shot for the goal, only for it to be blocked by the goalie for the Mariners. This caused a 0-0 tie heading into the second half of the game.
Trojans head coach Daniel Link rallied his team to the opposite side of the field for a quick half time huddle, while Marin College head coach Ben Studholme congratulated his players for their strong play in the first half. As the second half gets underway the two coaches gave their second half game plan to their teams and sent them back onto the field.
The Trojans were playing an aggressive and offensive style of play for a good portion of the first fifteen minutes of the second half. The Trojans kept the pressure on by keeping the ball near the Mariners goal.
At about 63 minutes into the game, the Mariners were given a penalty shot. Maher Menzala tackled a player from the Mariners, and was flagged as a foul. The Mariners scored the goal after the Trojans goalie did not anticipate which direction the ball was going to go and ended up diving in the wrong direction.
With their lead intact, the Mariners began to gain momentum in the remaining 20 minutes, trying to keep the ball on the Trojans side of the field. As the game was slowly reaching its end, the Trojans had very little time to tie the game up.
During the final two minutes of the game the Trojans picked up the defensive pace and applied pressure to cause the Mariners to turn the ball over. The ball was passed up the field to Estaban Morales, who took the last shot into the Mariners goal to tie up the game.
The game ends and the crowd cheers, along with the players rejoicing over the scored goal. The tie game brought the Trojans record to 1 win, 1 loss, and 1 tie.
The Skyline Trojans travel to Modesto to play the Modesto Junior College on Sept. 14, 2012.
