Blair Hardee: What’s your favorite part about playing on the team?
Courtney Chew: We’re so close that we’ve created a deeper bond. We’ve become a family.
BH: Who are your biggest rivals?
CC: CSM. We’ve played them twice already. Unfortunately, we lost both times. The first time we lost by 14, I think, and the second time we lost by about 10. Both of those were actually really close games.
BH: Are you playing them in the play-offs?
CC: The last game we just played [against CSM] was for play-offs. We’re knocked out of play-offs, but we were still playing for fourth. The top three teams go to the play-offs.
BH: Tell us about the season. What are you personally most proud of and what has the team done that you’re proud of?
CC: Leading the team and being one of the three returners is a lot to step up to. We’re a really small team. Everyone thinks that we’re too weak, too soft, and too inexperienced but at the end of the game, we put up a good fight. We don’t stop fighting until the buzzer rings. We beat Chabot this season when we were expected to lose. That was a big game that we won. It was a rowdy crowd, a rough team; it was like a life or death game. We beat them at their home court. Hopefully, this Friday we’ll beat them again and take fourth place for the season.
BH: Are you planning on playing next year?
CC:Yes, but I’m hoping to transfer a school in southern California, Whittier or La Sierra.
BH: Did you know when you were in high school that you were going to play basketball in college?
CC: I didn’t know I was going to play in college until the end of my senior year, when I didn’t get in where I wanted. Then I said, ‘Well, if [Skyline] is going to offer me a spot on the team, why not?’ So I decided to come here to play.
BH: What kind of academic requirements are there to stay on the team?
CC: You have to have a 2.0. There is a certain number of credits you have to take to play. Say you fail a class fall semester and only get 10 credits (you need 12 to be a basketball player), if you fulfill 14 credits the next semester you can still play.
BH: Is there anything else you want to say about the team or the program?
CC: Even though people judge us through looks, we’re a lot better and a lot stronger inside. We don’t ever stop fighting and I think that’s what people don’t see. People underestimate us, but we rise to the occasion.
Both men’s and women’s basketball will play their final home games this Friday, the 18th. After that, the season will end and will not resume until winter 2011-12. Skyline baseball and badminton will continue until summer.
