Skyline students should not have class on election days. In times like these, the importance of voting cannot be understated.
One of Skyline’s strategic goals is to encourage civic mindedness, but it is hard to be committed to that goal when students and staff are still expected to show up to school on election days. Allowing a day off of class for students to go out and vote would help to not only encourage students to speak up, but also to educate themselves and get more involved in the world of politics.
Currently, there is some stigma around voting for younger people. These younger generations don’t feel they have a say in political matters. Whether it be the elections at the local, state, or federal level, it’s important to make sure student voices are heard through the various voting bills and propositions. By not having classes on election days, this would help emphasize the importance and need for students to get out there and vote.
With the internet widely available, students have access to various resources to update them on upcoming election ballots and propositions. Students are educated enough to think about what they are voting for and what would help or hurt them.
Future generations are going to be affected by these voting outcomes therefore it’s most important that voting gets as much attention as possible.
With increased political tensions all over the country, emphasizing the need to vote is even more important than ever. It sounds counterintuitive at first, but with heightened tension, comes heightened dissatisfaction and these issues are not going to solve themselves. Going out and addressing the issues by voting is crucial in keeping this generation’s voice alive.
People are often revolted by the idea of politics and would rather look elsewhere and ignore the issues at hand. Though it can be nice to not think about what’s going on short term, in the long term, it can be harmful and cause a general disinterest in current events and elections that will have long lasting effects.
Skyline, voting needs to be emphasized and you have the power to make that possible.
