Come one, come all and welcome to the opinions section’s newest addition: The Secrets of the Birds and the Bees. In this wonderful space, we will explore not only the awkward realm of sex but also the confusing and mysterious realms of dating and relationships.

What “The Secrets of the Birds and the Bees” has in store for you this semester is an abundance of advice on potential problems any one of you out there might be dealing with as we speak. For example, struggling with your sexuality.

Oct. 11, 2015 not only celebrated the 27th anniversary of National Coming Out Day, but this year marked the first time that it took place after the nationwide legalization of marriage equality. It doesn’t matter if you’re straight, gay, bisexual, lesbian, asexual, cisgender, genderless, gynesexual, intersex, transsexual, transitioning, questioning your sexual orientation, or anything else. It shouldn’t matter in the first place, and it’s almost absurd that this country needs an entire day to help the people that aren’t able to express their feelings without hiding them or feeling ashamed.

Note the key word, almost absurd. This day is significant for everyone because it allows for a sense of security for people that might not have been able to share their true selves. It’s America, and America means equality for all, right? The legalization of marriage equality is definitely a step in the right direction, but I’m not sure anything will ever be enough.

There will always be ignorant people in the world. These people will always use slang terms that are completely disrespectful and politically incorrect. These people will likely never realize what damage they could potentially be causing to someone else’s situation, because these ignorant people use the slang terms in large populations where you know someone is bound to be effected. If only they knew, too, just what they were doing.

Any type of discrimination against any community is what we hope will eventually fade out. I’m not confident that sexual equality will be something people can call ‘equal’ in my lifetime. I’d like to be proven wrong, so we’ll see what the next generation has in store for our population.
