The Journalism Association of Community Colleges’ annual state convention took place in nearby Sacramento this past weekend, bringing together the young journalistic minds that will shape tomorrow’s media. News staffs from across the state got the opportunity to rub shoulders with their peers for a weekend filled with meetings, workshops and competitions. In the words of TSV Adviser, Nancy Kaplan-Biegel, “this is our Oscars,” and we were bringing the largest team to ever represent Skyline College in the event’s history.
I had been fortunate enough to have participated in two regional JACC events in the past but this weekend marked my first state convention and given the strong showing TSV has made in the past, I imagined winning them all. Think: MJ at the 1984 Grammys.
We left the conference quite humbled, failing to take home any awards for our publication. This is the first time in my tenure on staff that The Skyline View was not recognized for its content in a single category. This was quite unexpected. We let our editorial hubris get the best of us and our complacency went noticed. Skyline, we apologize for the disservice.
Although disappointed, we return rejuvenated and begin the road to redemption. We have staffers who were recognized for their on-the-spot efforts, showing that we can compete with the rest. We had our wake-up call and now we have to prove we belong.
There are only a pair of issues left this semester and the shift may go unnoticed, but we plan to work toward the next JACC state convention. The competitive spirit of the TSV staff is alive and we have big things planned for the foreseeable future.
With that said, I encourage our readers to be critical of our coverage. If there is a group on campus underrepresented, let us know. If there’s a story that should be written, we want to hear what it is. If there are Skyline students who want to be a part of this publication, let’s talk. Contact us at [email protected] and have a direct influence on campus news.
