America stands divided on the charges that have been brought against George Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin, some think the killing was racially motivated, while others think that pursuing Zimmerman is a move towards regulating guns in America.
Frankly I’ve been a little frustrated that no charges were filed against Zimmerman, not because I believe he’s guilty or innocent, but because with no charges filed there would likely be no need or cause for an investigation. Now that charges have been filed it would seem that maybe both families involved will find some closure.
Personally I feel like the matter should have been investigated immediately and have been furious with the Sanford Police Department for what I would call shoddy work. Honestly I’m not surprised though, there’s blogs and articles all over about police stations in Florida abusing their power, breaking laws and generally just not doing a good job.
So with Zimmerman being charged perhaps there will not only be an investigation into the death of Martin, but an investigation into the conduct of the Sanford Police Department. I for one look forward to the trial because I would like to see the evidence for myself instead of just hearsay and arguing between various news organizations. The whole ordeal has reminded me of the Amanda Knox situation over in Italy in terms of conflicting media reports painting completely different pictures.
I’ve watched a couple of interviews with the families of both involved parties and there seem to be a few holes in what they’ve said happened. I do worry that so much time has passed at this point that it may be hard to recreate the events of that night accurately and justice will not be done.
One conflicting story that I’ve heard is the brother of Zimmerman saying that Martin had covered up Zimmerman’s mouth while pinning him down. If that’s the case then it would have been impossible for Zimmerman to be the one yelling for help, but the family of Zimmerman is “sure” that it’s him.
Martin allegedly was trying to wrestle the gun out of Zimmerman’s hand which is what caused him to shoot and kill Martin. Being disarmed while wielding a gun is a dangerous thing, because having your own gun used against you decreases the odds of the shooter ever being found since the gun would be registered to you and the bullets would be fired from your gun.
There are a lot of unknown factors in this situation. There’s been allegations that the photos used in the media of Martin are older, and thus not an accurate depiction of him. We know that Zimmerman was licensed to carry a weapon, but does he have a psychological history? Martin’s email was allegedly hacked by a self-proclaimed white supremacist on 4chan. Details of a supposed drug deal in the emails were released.
I think all parties involved need to really calm down and wait until details are out. A good example of someone who should have acted more level headed is Spike Lee who released an address who he thought belonged to Zimmerman but actually belonged to a woman who was in no way involved, leading to heavy undeserved harassment.
We may never know what happened that day, but trying to find out and it not happening is better than not trying at all.
