There is a debate going on right now on whether the 14th Amendment should be rewritten to make it that “anchor babies” don’t get U.S. citizenship.
“Anchor babies” are children of non-American citizens who are born in the United States. As the name implies they are anchors in the sense that because these children are born as U.S. citizens their parents by default get to stay in the U.S as well to take care of the aforementioned child.
This is nothing more than a weak attempt to try regulating the flow of foreigners that try to enter the United States. And to everyone else who supports it, they are nothing but paranoid-induced fear mongerers who use this as an excuse to justify their bigotry.
Not to mention the hypocrisy going into this is very obvious. A lot of Republicans are for this idea and even claim that it’s what the founding father would have wanted, given the situation. But when people bring up editing the 2nd amendment they start talking about how the amendments are sacred and shouldn’t be change.
Personally, if I had to choose between getting rid of guns and getting rid of immigrants, I’d choose the latter.
The two main points to this 14th amendment revision are; 1) Terrorists coming to America with the sole intention of birthing sleeper agents and 2) Foreigners coming to America and birthing children not out of love but as a free ticket to stay in the country.
Right out of the gate I can pretty much knock off point one. Terrorists coming to America to birth children then train them to overrule us? This is real life, not a Tom Clancy novel. I can’t imagine this actually happening and it makes more sense that this is just another excuse for paranoid people to hate Muslims.
On the other hand, I have to admit the idea of people coming to America to have a child and then use that child as a means to stay in the country does give me pause for thought.
Whereas the idea of terrorists birthing children in the states only to bring them back to their country of origin and training them as death soldiers seems far from reality. I can honestly imagine seeing a desperate family coming to America and giving birth to a child as a last resort so they don’t get deported.
But what scares me more than sleeper agent terrorist babies and immigrants birthing children as anchors, is the thought that a family seeking a better life by birthing their child in this will be denied their right to stay.
As previously stated this is just a feeble attempt to regulate how many immigrants get into the country and from there it could snowball to something much worse. If we let this happens then where does it end? You can’t be a U.S. citizen unless both your parents were born in America, reserving the right to take away citizenship at any moment, even after going through the proper channels?
Allowing anyone to come into our country is what made us great and what better way to show how great a country we are by allowing others to make a better life within our great nation and not have the fear of being deported.
