Campus mourns loss of mentor
The Skyline community is mourning the loss of Richard Soyombo, Dean of Global Learning Programs and Services. Soyombo passed away suddenly on the morning of April 20, according to an announcement from Skyline College President Dr. Regina Stanback Stroud.
Associated Students of Skyline College President Nicole Harris worked closely with Soyombo in the Global Mentorship Program and considers him a mentor and source of inspiration.
“He’s such a light, just a beacon of hope,” Harris said.
She added that Soyombo’s own life was an inspiration to others.
“He came from Africa to here, and just worked really hard and gave his all to his community,” Harris said. “He was all about joining together to work for one good. That’s how I remember him. It was funny because every time I needed encouragement, we somehow managed to cross paths. He was that person who lifted you up when you were down.”
Harris hopes that his kindness and inspiration will carry on after his death.
“The warmth that Skyline offers, he’s a big part of that,” Harris said.
The ASSC is planning an event to honor Soyombo’s life and details will be forthcoming, according to Harris.
