Over 1,700 pounds of food was donated during the Second Harvest Food Drive to help those in need during the holiday season.

“We wanted to achieve a goal surpassing 1600 lbs. which is a standard set with respect to the amount of barrels we had, 12.” Flavious Abellana, vice president of Kappa Beta Delta wrote via email.

The nearly 20 clubs involved with the food drive exceeded that goal, accumulating 1,714 pounds of food.

Picking the right time of year may have had something to do with the success of the food drive. According to Abellana, the timing of the food drive coinciding with the holiday season was by design.

“We decided to host the drive as we enter the Christmas and Holiday season because this is the time where the spirit of giving is at its peak and low­income households are in most need of food.” Abellana wrote.

The scale for success; however, has been altered since last year.

“Last year’s turnout was unsuccessful in terms of the standard set around 2,500lbs. With roughly 17 barrels. However, they were only able to collect around 1600lbs.”

Although the amount of barrels has been scaled down, the amount of food donated has increased by over 1,000 pounds. Whatever the scale, that’s 1,714 pounds of food that will be going to individuals and families that may have not had a full sized holiday meal.

According to the Skyline College website the Second Harvest Food Bank has partnered with Skyline’s SparkPoint center, to provide a food pantry to those in need. The food pantry is open Tuesday through Thursday, and appointments can be scheduled from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
