The decision to close down Crestmoor Elementary was decided by the San Bruno Park School District board members Feb. 14.
Crestmoor Elementary is located near the San Bruno blast site that happened in 2010.
There was a unanimous vote to close down the school at the district meeting. The decision was due to the recent budget cuts for school all through California. Also, according to Henry Sanchez, President of the San Bruno Park District board, there is a small number of students enrolled at the school now, so to help conserve money they plan to retire Crestmoor Elementary.
The students will be moved to other schools that are close by such as John Muir Elementary School and Rollingwood Elementary. A portion of the students will be transferred to Rollingwood Elementary while another group will attend John Muir Elementary School. Some of the transfer students at Crestmoor Elementary will possibly be sent back home to be home-schooled as was done before they attended the school.
The idea was put forth by Kevin Martinez, a San Bruno Park School District board member. With this plan in place, the board hopes it will help the students get a better education. Another benefit of this change is that it will help save money on the cost of electricity, gas and water used by the school.
This will take effect at the end of the school year. The building will then be used for whatever purpose the community decides it is needed most for.
