A 20-year old man is being held without bail and is awaiting a preliminary hearing for last month’s slaying of a Skyline College student in Millbrae.
Laungatasi Ahio is being charged for the August 4 stabbing of 19-year old Jared Afu on, a first semester Skyline College student. Ahio is currently being held in the San Mateo County jail awaiting a September 14 court date to set a preliminary hearing, the D.A.’s office confirmed.
Ahio’s defense attorney, Edward Pomeroy, was unavailable for comment as of press time.
According to the San Mateo Times, Afu, a summer semester automotive student, was smoking a cigarette with three other friends near the Mills High School tennis courts on August 4 when Ahio approached him. Ahio believed Afu was romantically involved with his wife. After a brief altercation, Ahio proceeded to stab Afu in the head and neck area before fleeing on foot. Afu was pronounced dead on the scene by police.
Paul Spakowski, Afu’s Automotive Professor at Skyline, remembers him as “withdrawn” and “quiet”.
“He was a real nice kid,” Spakowski said. “It came as a real shock. There was no indication of anything violent in his background.”
