At 9:15, a campus wide power outage occurred at SkylineCollege. Soon after at a little before 10:00 Students were instructed by administrative staff to evacuate the buildings.
It was announced that classes would resume again at 12:00 noon. But while many students were missing out on scheduled classes there was a group of people who benefited from the resulting power out. Club booths located in the quad.
As a result of building evacuations many students were forced to congregate in the quad and cafeteria area. This in turn gave way to club booths getting more students then they normally would have.
“A lot of people whose job it is to walk around handing out free samples came back with students” Said Mica Trinidad, Secretary of FSU “We’ve gotten a lot of people coming to our booth”
Normally when clubs set up booths in the quad little to no students approach them as explained by MESA Director Stephen Fredricks, there was a massive turn out in students because of the power outage.
Fredricks noted usually what happens is there is a small rush between 10:00am to 10:10 am followed by an hour of sitting around doing nothing. But today was different in that the rush was constant and for the longest time it didn’t stop.
Some booth representatives got so much students they were actually grateful for the outage.
People like Alice Erskine Instructor of the Surgical Tech Program, who when asked if more students than usual came to her booth responded with “Tell me about it”.
“We’ve gotten a huge influx of students coming to our booth” Said Alice “A lot of students were interested in our program, we couldn’t have picked a better time to set up”
Other thankful attendants included Ray Gonzalez; President of the Skyline Fellowship Club who believes this was a blessing from God.
“When I first came here there were only four people, but then there were just so many students” Said Gonzalez “I am thankful for this because it gave so many students the opportunity to see what we had to talk about”
Although many classes were indeed cancelled as a result of the power outage, it did give many clubs a rare opportunity to represent themselves to the student body in a way not normally provided.
Stephen Fredricks Program Director of MESA might have put it best when he said, “It’s definitely nice to see an increase in students for all the booths in the quad”.
